Black History Month Sparks Innovation in Wearables

Apple marks Black History Month with the Unity Connection Braided Solo Loop, designed by Black creatives. Beyond products, Apple continues to lead with action, supporting DEI...

Every year, February 1 marks the start of Black History Month, which is celebrated to remember and honor the achievements of Black people around the world. Black History Month was first started in 1926 by Carter G.Woodson as “Negro History Week,” which was later expanded into a month-long commemoration.

Black History Month is about remembering and honoring the sacrifices and achievements of Black people. During this period, Black people are remembered for the situations they have to go through, and show support to them. During this time, Black people celebrate with parades, get together, and other events.

Just like any other special occasion, several brands and companies launch offers and even products to show solidarity with Black people. Similarly, this year, a new smartwatch band has been revealed, named Unity Connection Braided Solo Loop, honoring Black History Month.

What is Unity Connection Braided Solo Loop?

On January 26, Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Unity Connection Braided Solo Loop, honoring Black History Month. The new Apple Watch band is now available for online order and will be available at offline stores by tomorrow. Apple has released two Unity bands previously, showcasing its awareness of social responsibility.

Apple’s Black Creatives and Allies have designed these unity bands. This Apple Watch band features a thread of the same colors as the Pan-African flag. Unity Connection Braided Solo Loop is produced by using recycled polyester yarn filaments on the outer layer of thin silicone threads, using advanced braiding machinery.

While this design gives a textured feel, it still has a soft touch. The smartwatch band consists of multiple shades of red, green, and black. It is also sweat and water-resistant.

Equality Isn’t a Campaign at Apple

Many companies come up with different marketing campaigns and discounts during Black History Month. Apple has always been up for equality and inclusivity; it doesn’t wait for occasions or trends. In Feb 2025, 95% of Apple shareholders voted to continue DEI policy, while top companies were closing DEI departments under the pressure of conservative committee’s suggestions.

Along with the Unity band, Apple will also support organizations and NGOs that inspire connection and promote creativity amongst underprivileged people. Grants will be allocated to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Urban Arts in New York City, Youth Music in London, Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, and Enactus México in Mexico City.
