NASA’s Robotic Refueling Mission 3 (RRM3) completed an initial set of tool operations designed by the Satellite Servicing Projects Division, making the idea of using water ice, oxygen or methane from other worlds as fuel for spacecraft seem plausible. The ability to store and transfer cryogenic fuels will help enable interstellar voyages in the far future. Currently, any spacecraft to far away destinations such as the Moon and Mars must carry all of its propellants with it from launch to termination. This requires the spacecraft to c...
Elon Musk surely knows how to set off a twitterstorm. On August 16, he sent a tweet: “Nuke Mars!” Does this mean the founder and CEO of Tesla literally wants to nuke the Red Planet? We hope not! Planet Earth is still experiencing the repercussions of setting off two nuclear bombs. It would be insane to dream of colonizing another planet only to nuke it before half of the Earth’s population hasn’t even left the surface yet. Nuke Mars! — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) August 16, 2019 What’s intriguing is that Elon Musk has conveniently...
In 2016, France became the envy of countries racing for a renewable future when it turned a one-kilometer stretch of a roadway into the world’s first solar road. After less than three years in operation, the project has turned out to be an absolute disaster, reports French newspaper Le Monde. The road surface has deteriorated beyond recognition, according to the paper. The photovoltaic panels that made up the 2,800 square meter of road surface have started peeling off the road and cracking. The world’s first solar road project was a...
Facebook is back in the news facing fresh scrutiny over its handling of user data. Facebook has been paying hundreds of outside contractors to transcribe clips of audio from users of its services, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. The company confirmed that it has been transcribing users’ audio and said it was no longer doing so. Since 2015, Messenger has offered to transcribe audio clips, although this feature is turned off by default. Facebook claims that the users who opted in to the feature had their audio clips reviewed by third-...
Eye health is something taken for granted by so many of us. We rarely consider how different our lives would be if our vision was impaired. But visual impairment is a bitter reality for more than 3.4 million Americans. All is about to change, thanks to researchers from visual prosthetics company Second Sight Medical Products. The Orion Visual Cortical Prosthesis System, build by Second Sight, sends electrical signals to the wearer’s brain via an implant, allowing them to see again. The bionic eyes consist of: 1.) a small camera mount...
Around 1.5 billion people use Gmail every month and majority of this group trust Google to protect them from threats and hacks. Google’s existing machine learning models block more than 99.9 percent of spam, phishing, and malware from reaching people’s inboxes. But being on top of today’s highly-skilled cyber attackers, more sophisticated efforts were required.  This year in February Google revealed how it is staying ahead of refined threats. TensorFlow, an open-source machine learning framework developed by Google blocks an extra 10...
Israeli spacecraft Beresheet crashed into the moon during a failed landing attempt on April 11. On the lunar lander was a cellular “library” that includes plant and animal cells and human DNA. It was created by the U.S.-based Arch Mission Foundation, which strives to create “backups” of Earth. According to founder Nova Spivack, the collection of material included enough DNA to regenerate life on Earth. It seems the cargo may still fulfill its intended purpose. Among the technology lost in the crash were a few thousand tiny tardigrad...
Hong Kong’s protest against the proposed extradition bill is getting bigger and more elaborate with every passing day. While authorities are using facial recognition cameras to identify protesters, the protesters are in turn using laser beams to defend themselves.   Since early June, millions of Hong Kong citizens have taken to the streets to show their disagreement for the proposed extradition bill that would allow Hong Kong residents to be extradited to jurisdictions that Hong Kong lacks a formal agreement with, including mainland...
Typically, a journey from Mumbai to Pune could take up to 3.5 hours. But with the Hyperloop project, the first-of-its-kind in the world, this duration could come down to 35 minutes. As mentioned on Virgin’s website, “The DP World – Virgin Hyperloop One consortium was also named as the Original Project Proponent for the Mumbai-Pune hyp...
