With a diverse range of messaging options offered in the digital landscape, Instagram Private Notes have made a discreet entry into the domain. With Messenger for Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, WeChat and Instagram DMs reigning supreme for a long time, Notes for Instagram has relatively been the lesser-known cousin. The distinctiveness of Instagram’s notes features is its short-form and casual way of sharing status updates in short posts to one’s Close Friends – a limited audience.

Amongst the several new features to its app, the Instagram Notes feature was the first to roll out. Here are a few things to know about Private Notes before you learn how to send private notes on Instagram and how you can view them if you’ve received an Instagram chat note.
1. There is no notification prompt if a friend has posted a Note – one has to check their Inbox to check it as the Notes will hang around but disappear within 24 hours.
2. Private notes are enabled to be short 60-character spontaneous messages but are a part of Instagram’s group messaging spectrum.
3. Each Note can be sent along with music and can be shared with either followers who follow you back or those grouped under ‘Close Friends’.
4. A truly ephemeral feature – if a new Note is sent to the same people, the previous Note will automatically be erased.

In your inbox, the Note you shared will be floating over your profile icon. Similarly, small bubbles floating over other people’s profile icons in your Inbox are their Instagram private notes. If a text bubble cannot accommodate the complete message, or if you want to listen to the music alongside it, tap the icon to read the whole message. After someone replies to your Instagram Private Note, it becomes a part of regular DMs to continue the conversation.
If you wish to delete the Note before the 24 hours are up, go back to the icon where your chat is displayed and tap on it. The window prompt from below allows you to choose to leave a new Note or delete it. Choose Delete Note or replace the existing note.
