OpenAI is venturing into AI wearable audio device as per a recent leak. Sam Altman’s OpenAI audio hardware leak that is a pair of earbuds is in production to compete with Apple’s AirPods and other flagship earbuds in the market.

There have been longstanding rumors about OpenAI moving into consumer hardware consumer and they could be real. This is OpenAI’s first attempt at wearable AI. As per the report, the company is developing an AI-powered earbuds codenamed “Sweet Pea”.
OpenAI audio hardware leak
As per the leak, the wearable AI will listen, think and respond in realtime potentially by blending Gen AI with everyday audio. The earbud is integrated with ChatGPT for conversational AI experiences
OpenAI Jony Ive collaboration
The audio hardware is reportedly being developed in collaboration with ex-Apple designer Jony Ive giving the project a level of credibility that most AI gadgets lack. Sweet Pea earbuds could be the first major product after OpenAI acquired Ive’s design firm, io hardware, in May 2024 for $6.5B.
As per the leaks, the earbuds are top priority in OpenAI’s hardware roadmap.
Sweet Pea earbuds possible features
The earbud is expected to be a screenless audio product, features include two pill-shaped modules worn behind the ear, housed in a metal egg-shaped charging case.
A custom Samsung Exynos 2nm-class chip is said to be powering the earbuds, this could possibly position it as an intelligent alternative to traditional earbuds. Sweet Pea would process voice commands, contextual understanding, and user interactions directly on the device instead of sending through cloud.
The company is said to use premium materials comparable to high-end smartphones.
OpenAI looking to replace smartphones with this earbud
The Ive and Altman collaboration stems from a desire to create a “family of devices” that create new ways to interact with AI: screenless, context-aware, and possibly more human-centric. The idea for them is to go beyond the oldschool smartphones. As per report, manufacturing is handled by Foxconn.
As per the report, Sweet Pea could replace many basic phone functions, as it would allow users to control apps and services completely via voice. To support this function the earbud would include microphones and cameras that will continuously perceive the surrounding environment.
AI wearable audio device Sweet Pea release date
It is expected that OpenAI shall be targeting a September 2028 release for Sweet Pea. The goal for first year is to ship around 40 to 50 million units, highlighting the company’s confidence in the earbud, as it is a big number. It seems that this launch plan is completely in sync with the ongoing efforts to enhance ChatGPT’s audio models for seamless voice interactions.
