There were many internet memes suggesting that the delay is to give Reality Labs team “breathing room” to make sure the AI-powered smart glasses be polished at launch.

Meta Malibu 2 Limited Edition Set for 2026

Meta isn’t leaving 2026 empty for AR enthusiasts. The company plans to release the Meta Malibu 2 limited edition next year, offering users a taste of next-gen features while waiting for the Phoenix AR glasses in 2027.

As per the memo Meta is also planning to release a different, “limited edition” wearable, codenamed ‘Malibu 2’, in 2026, and is also going to start working on a next-gen Quest headset focused on immersive gaming with “significantly improved unit economics.”

What the Phoenix Glasses Were Expected to Be

The device, sometimes referred to as the Meta Phoenix MR glasses or simply “Phoenix,” had been rumored as a lightweight mixed‑reality headset with a goggle‑style form factor. Early builds reportedly included an external “puck” for power and processing, enabling the main headset to stay light and more comfortable for longer sessions.

The Meta Phoenix MR glasses’ previously code-name was Puffin, which weighed around 100 grams (3.5 ounces) and had lower-resolution displays and had much weaker computing performance than high-end headsets like Apple’s Vision Pro.

As per reports Meta is expected to make budget cuts of up to 30% for its metaverse initiative. The metaverse group sits within Reality Labs, which produces the company’s Quest mixed-reality headsets, smart glasses made with EssilorLuxottica’s Ray-Ban and upcoming augmented-reality glasses.
