Another lifestyle brand has entered the smartwatch fray. This time, its Nixon bringing the world’s first ultra-rugged action sports smartwatch- The Mission.
Nixon Mission isn’t your average smartwatch. Debuting in the annual expo Baselworld 2016 taking place in Switzerland this week, it is primarily aimed at snowboarders, surfers, swimmers, and other athletic daredevils. It comes equipped with innovative features and is made with the highest levels of durability.
Nixon Action Sports Smartwatch
Built on the latest technology from Google’s Android Wear smartwatch platform, the smartwatch is perfectly tailored for extreme conditions. Most notably, the Android Wear device touts a 10-ATM water resistance rating. It can hold up in depths of up to 100 meters (330 feet), which the company claims is the highest waterproof rating of any smartwatch in the market.
The 48mm smartwatch has around 1.39-inch AMOLED touch screen that is protected by a stainless steel bezel and a Corning Gorilla Glass crystal panel. In order to suit the different needs of its customers, the dual-layer silicone band will be offered in a range of colours.
The watch material is made from a combination of polycarbonate and stainless steel to support the watch’s durability and comfort. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 processor and is actually the first smartwatch to have this chipset. It sports 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage for music. Battery when fully charged can last one whole day.
In line with other smartwatches, it includes a range of sensors including a GPS, thermometer, altimeter, barometer, e-compass, gyrometer, accelerometer, and humidity sensors.
The Mission works with Android smartphones running Android 4.3 or higher and iPhones running iOS 8.2 or higher.
The smartwatch also comes preloaded with custom apps that transmit live conditions and activity-tracking data. The California-based company developed an app for the watch that shows surf and ski conditions at a glance on the wrist. It has teamed up with Trace, an action sports company and also with Surfline and Snocountry to help with tracking different activities.
The custom Nixon Mission app displays live weather conditions. Mountaineers can keep track of snow conditions while surfers remain updated about the wave patterns around the world. The custom Trace app will also help keep track of owners’ active lifestyles.
The device comes with several customization options with over 20 silicone band colours, digital displays and over 15 bezel options such as Cerakote, stainless steel, gunmetal and gold. The price for the basic sports smartwatch is $400, but can vary depending on the customization options. It is expected to be out in the market by October and will be available at Nixon.com and select retailers.
