Sleep Number Mattress Spec

In their basic design, Sleep Number mattresses are similar to most mattresses: Each contains an upper comfort section made of foam layers and a lower support section.

Instead of a base of foam or springs, however, the lower support in most Sleep Number mattresses is an adjustable air chamber and polyfoam base pad.

The air chamber allows you to adjust the firmness level of the mattress by inflating or deflating the chamber. You have 20 firmness options total, ranging from least firm to most firm (5-100) in increments of 5. You can adjust the settings via the Sleep Number app on your phone or tablet, or with a remote, which costs an additional $50.

Most Sleep Number mattresses have separate air chambers on each side so that you and your sleep partner can each choose your own firmness levels. Twin and twin XL models have a single air chamber. You can also get versions of certain full- and queen-size models with a single air chamber, but they are not available online; you have to call the company or visit a store in person to purchase.

The pump for the air chamber sits on the floor by your headboard, unless you purchase one of the company’s smart bases, into which the pump is integrated.

Sleep Number’s sleep-tracking sensors sit inside the mattress. As per the company, the SleepIQ technology tracks heart and breathing rates and body movements through ballistocardiography.

You can also pair a Sleep Number mattress with one of the company’s smart bases: the FlexFit 1, FlexFit 2, or FlexFit 3. Each offers additional adjustability (such as raising your head or “the feeling of zero gravity,” plus under-the-bed lighting). All FlexFit smart bases are adjustable in the Sleep Number app or with a separate remote control.
