Oura is dragging the Finnish smart ring maker into a high-stakes legal fight in the Eastern District of Texas. This comes few days after Oura sought to block Galaxy Ring imports through the ITC. As per the complaint, these companies are involved in the “unlawful importation and sale of products that infringe on several of Oura’s patents.”

Oura Patent Infringement Lawsuit

Oura, a Finnish health technology company popular for its smart fitness ring, elaborates that the patents relate to the Oura Ring’s form factor along with the internal and external components, and the manufacturing methods used to produce the device.

Oura filed the lawsuit with the U.S. District Court last month and publicly announced the lawsuit this week. As per Oura, this is after defending multiple unprovoked attacks on its patent portfolio. The company’s patent is a ring-shaped device that includes sensors, electronics, and batteries in a specific arrangement. It uses curved battery design to make thin smart rings possible.

Legal Conflict in Smart Ring Market

It’s an action that escalates the ongoing legal conflicts shaping the smart ring market’s present and future.

Earlier, Oura used the same patent to sue Circular, Ringconn, and Ultrahuman. Circular and Ringconn had to pay royalties after they lost. Ultrahuman refused to pay royalties and is appealing an cease-and-desist order from ITC against selling its smart ring sales in the US.

Oura has been aggressively defending its IP since the category began to take off a couple of years ago, previously settling disputes with competitors like RingConn and Circular.

If Oura receives a favorable outcome of this fresh complaint, the Samsung Galaxy Ring, Reebok Smart Ring, Amazfit Helio Ring, and Luna Ring 2 could all face the same fate.

This legal battle comes as no surprise as there has been many litigations in the smart ring market. Understandably, Oura holds patents that are foundational to smart ring design and functionality, and has a right to defect itself

Most likely Samsung will fight Oura in court to invalidate the Finnish as firm’s patent. Now it’s a wait-and watch game as only time will tell if the company will be successful or not.
