Smart Sleeve Predicts Frailty and Prevents Falls

AI-powered wearables are taking over the industry with advanced features and a wide range of usage. These wearables cater to kids, adults, and elders in health monitoring and fast recovery. Recently, University of Arizona researchers have developed an AI-powered wearable for the elderly, which uses an algorithm to predict early signs of vulnerability and weakness in elderly people.

Wearable technology is developed in the Gutruf lab, advancing preventive elderly care, including fall prediction and early detection of health decline. Phillipp Gutruf, associate professor of biomedical engineering and senior author for the research paper, said, “The current care model is mainly reactive. People often assess frailty after a fall or hospitalisation. With this new technology, we want to shift focus toward prevention.”

AI-Powered Wearable for The Elderly People

In May 2025, Gutruf’s lab published a study on a wearable device that measures stress through water vapors and skin gases. Enhancing and advancing the same technology, a 2-inch wide 3D printed sleeve lined with tiny sensors is “designed to be invisible,” said Gutruff.

Wearable consists of soft, breathable mesh sleeve which is worn around the lower leg. Sleeves have miniature sensors for simultaneously recording and analysing the movement of users to develop an AI report. This device only sends results to the connected device, minimizing the transfer of 99% raw data. Only results transmission eliminates the need for high-speed data.

Why Is It Important to Detect Frailty?

Several reports suggest that 15% of people aged 65 and older are affected by frailty. As per reports, frailty affects more than 15% of people aged 65 years or above and is hard to detect. An accidental fall is one of the major reasons behind hospitalization of the elderly. Frailty increases the risk of falls, limitations, and hospital admission.

The professor claims that they are looking forward to changing the focus with this new wearable for the elderly. The device focuses on preventing frailty instead of curing. It is very crucial for senior citizens; this can be a revolutionary device for preventive health measures.

Bridging the Healthcare Gap in Underdeveloped Regions

As per researchers, this device is best for people living in remote and underdeveloped areas. This wearable requires little to no infrastructure, and the result is prepared locally, making it suitable for people living in regions with less infrastructure and connectivity. This device can surely improve the life of elderly people if it really delivers the promised.
