London-based Nothing Technologies announced that it will launch its first Android-powered Nothing phone (1) later this year. At the Nothing event titled The Truth, CEO Carl Pei confirmed the news on March 23.
The consumer tech company claims to remove barriers between people and technology for a immersive experience. Carl Pei previously co-founded the mega successful OnePlus, and left the business in 2020 to venture out on his into Nothing. The Nothing event showcased the company’s roadmap for the future.
The Nothing OS and Release Date
Although he did not elaborate much on the build, he revealed that the Nothing Phone will be powered with the Nothing OS. The hardware is expected to be top notch and will “seamlessly integrate with software through bespoke fonts, colours, graphical elements and sounds.”
According to the company, their OS encompasses “the best features of pure Android, distilling the operating system to just the essentials, where every byte has a purpose. It is designed to deliver a fast, smooth and personal experience.” The OS will integrate with other leading brands and will come pre-installed on the phone.
Android fans are eager to see and check out the Nothing OS, and to compare it to its many rivals. Rumor has it that the company will offer free OS upgrades for three years and security patches for four years, in a bid to take on established rivals like Google.
The first preview of Nothing OS will be released by the company via the launcher sometime in April and available for download on select smartphone models. However, it did not specify which models will be compatible to run the download. More details about the OS and the phone itself will be released to the general public in the coming months. Experts believe that the Nothing Phone (1) will feature the Snapdragon processor as Qualcomm is a major investor in the business. Despite receiving no confirmation from the technology firm, experts expect to see the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 as most Android phones released or scheduled for release in 2022 will be opting for this processor.
This is the second product in development from the company. So far, Nothing has released the ear (1) Bluetooth earbuds. The Nothing earbuds made its debut in 2021. As of January, the company confirmed that they had shipped over 400,000 units. In an interview with TechCrunch in 2020, Pei has commented that the company has plans to produce several devices and that everything will be revealed in due time.
The Nothing phone release date is expected to be sometime in the summer of 2022.
Hardware & Design
Carl Pei also spoke about dynamic RAM caching which will help most-used apps in the phone launch faster, enhancing one’s user experience. Apps like voice recorder will be available in a minimalistic design that redefines user-friendly UI, and is equipped with a cool rewind and fast forward feature.
The tech company also shared an update on Twitter, along with a cryptic image. Experts believe that it might be a schematic of the Nothing phone featuring the back design that could be transparent and expose some of the key components.
Pei remains optimistic about the phone’s reception and stated “Having raised $144 million, built a team of over 300 people and secured support from trusted partners like Qualcomm Technologies, Inc, we are ready for the phone (1) to mark the start of change for the sleepy smartphone market.”
The company also announced a$10 million allocation for an upcoming equity-based community investment round at the same valuation as its Series B fundraise co-led by EQT Ventures and C Ventures.
Pei informed netizens at the Nothing event that the company is investing in the community so that their supporters get a chance to be part of the highly-competitive market as they take on the “giants of the industry.”
